Live and Work in Friuli Venezia Giulia
As part of our Live and Work Anywhere program, Airbnb has partnered with the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to highlight why it is a great destination for remote workers looking to combine work, relaxation and adventure.
From ancient UNESCO sites, to stunning mountain ranges, lagoons and golden beaches, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region that has it all. It spreads across the north-eastern corner of Italy, about an hour from Venice. The region is relatively small (you can cross it by car in just an hour), but it contains a remarkable diversity of landscapes: sea, mountains, hills and lakes. For remote workers, there is great connectivity and Wi-Fi coverage, while the capital Trieste and the region’s other towns and cities are consistently near the top in quality-of-life rankings. And to top it off, the area is known for the quality of its wine and food, including its world-famous tiramisu. Why Friuli Venezia Giulia?
Sea and mountains, right in the city
This region is one of Italy’s hidden gems, little known to international travellers and yet packed with jaw-dropping sights: there’s the historic port of Trieste by the Slovenian border, sandy beaches in the south and snow-capped mountains in the north—plus some of the country’s finest wines. The towns of Udine, Trieste, Pordenone and Gorizia offer plenty of opportunities to practise a variety of sports including sailing, climbing, and horseback riding—and there’s endless ski and cycle opportunities outside of town. The Barcolana annual festival is the world's largest regatta and takes place in the Gulf of Trieste
Exceptional quality of life
Leading Italian business newspaper, Il Sole 24 Ore ranked Trieste the best Italian city for overall quality of life in 2021, and the regional capital came in first for ‘Culture and Leisure’ and second for ‘Business and Work’. Smaller cities Pordenone and Udine also appear in the top ten. It’s easy to feel at home in this region thanks to great transport links with a wide network of buses and boats connecting the main cities on the coast. Guests can expect a warm welcome and a buzzing, international vibe.
A great remote-working infrastructure
How would you like to take your meetings from a beachside cafe? Trieste, Udine, Pordenone and Gorizia all offer excellent internet connectivity, including Wi-Fi across the city making the ‘work anywhere’ dream a reality. There’s also reliable 4G and plenty of inexpensive sim-only data plans.
Unique benefits for long-term visitors
In addition, the region is going the extra mile to make remote workers feel welcome. The first 500 guests who register on the region’s portal will be gifted a FGV card, unlocking a week of entry to cultural venues, and there will also be free tickets on offer for cultural events like the Young Winter Olympic Games. Visitors will even have the opportunity to try some of the best of the region’s activities, from wine tasting to skiing, by becoming ambassadors for the region.
Food and wine
Locals are rightly proud of the Friulian wines with their unique and rich flavour produced by the sea and mountain climate. Wine-lovers will be in heaven vineyard hopping and trying the region's many white and red wines, and even some amber or “orange wine” varieties. To accompany, there’s a fabulous selection of local meats, including a protected prosciutto. This region is also known for tiramisù and its version of the dessert also has official designation. The Ein Prosit event in July showcases the best of Friuli Venezia Giulia's food and wine production, with presentations, tastings, meetings and conferences featuring international stars of the food world, while Gusti di frontiera in the fall is the region's largest food and wine event, offering a taste journey through various European countries and the five continents.
A thriving cultural scene
The region is known for its open and international atmosphere and outstanding cultural scene. In October, there’s Le giornate del cinema muto, one of the world's most important film festivals dedicated to the rediscovery and study of silent films and early cinema; in April it’s the Far East Film Festival, the largest Western showcase dedicated to Asian popular cinema. At the No Borders Music Festival in the summer, outstanding jazz and soul music blends with stunning locations like the Fusine Lakes in the Tarvisio area. In September, Pordenone hosts one of the world’s most exciting literary festivals, where writers, philosophers, scientists and Nobel laureates from across the world come together.
